A blue jay in the hand is a lot calmer than you might think. I was mist netting for birds one summer and was intimidated at the sight of a blue jay tangled in the net. I went up to it and gently grabbed it with my left hand. It stayed absolutely still as I untangled it from the net with my right hand. Not long after the blue jay, a chickadee got caught in the net. It was a fighter. It struggled and bit and kicked the entire time I was untangling it from the net. Go figure.
